How to prevent diaper rash

Diaper rash is one of the most common problems for babies in the first years of life. Redness, rash, and fussiness can appear even with good care. The good news — in most cases it's easy to avoid by following a few simple rules.

Why irritation appears

A baby's skin is very delicate and sensitive. The main causes of irritation:

  • prolonged contact of skin with moisture
  • friction from the diaper
  • urine and stool residue
  • an unsuitable diaper size or material
  • infrequent diaper changes

Example: if the diaper isn't changed in time, the skin becomes wet and starts to inflame.

How to prevent irritation

1. Change diapers on time
Optimally — every 2–3 hours and immediately after a bowel movement.

Example: even if the diaper isn't completely full, it's better not to wait.

2. Let the skin "breathe"
Leave the baby without a diaper for 5–10 minutes several times a day.

Example: after a change, give the skin a moment to dry naturally.

3. Clean the skin gently
Use soft wipes or warm water without harsh products.

Example: with sensitive skin it's better to rinse with water than to use wipes too often.

4. Use protective creams
Cream under the diaper creates a barrier and protects the skin from moisture.

Example: apply a thin layer of cream at every change, especially overnight.

5. Pick the right diaper size
A diaper that's too tight rubs; one that's too loose leaks.

Example: if marks remain on the skin or there are leaks — it's worth changing the size.

6. Choose quality diapers
Good diapers absorb moisture better and let the skin stay dry.

What to do if irritation has already appeared

If you notice redness:

  • change the diaper more often
  • increase time without a diaper
  • use a healing cream
  • avoid new products that might worsen the reaction

If the irritation does not go away or gets worse, it's better to consult a doctor.

Important to remember

Even with proper care, irritation can sometimes occur — that's normal. The main thing is to react quickly and keep the skin dry and clean.

A baby's healthy skin means comfort and calm every day.
