What you shouldn't give to children under 1 year

The first year of life is the most important stage for a baby's development. During this time the digestive system is only just forming, so some foods are not just undesirable — they can be dangerous.

It's important for parents to know which foods cannot be given to a child under 1 year old, and why.

Main forbidden foods

1. Cow's milk as a main food
Before age one it is not suitable as a replacement for breast milk or formula.
The reason — high load on the kidneys and risk of allergy.

Example: small amounts can be used in cereals after 8–9 months, but not as a main drink.

2. Honey
Honey may contain bacteria that cause botulism in infants.

Example: even a small amount in cereal or water is undesirable.

3. Salt and sugar
A baby's kidneys are not yet ready to process excess salt, and sugar shapes unhealthy eating habits.

Example: don't salt soups or add sugar to cereal.

4. Juices before 6 months (and in general with caution)
Early introduction of juices can cause stomach irritation and digestive problems.

Example: it's better to give purees or water instead.

5. Nuts and whole hard foods
High risk of choking.

Example: a whole nut or piece of carrot can be dangerous.

6. Fish and seafood with high mercury content
Some types of fish can be heavy on a baby's body.

Example: tuna in large amounts is not recommended.

7. Smoked, fried, and fatty foods
Such food overloads a child's liver and stomach.

Example: sausages, fried meat, fast food.

8. Mushrooms
Difficult to digest and can be toxic.

9. Carbonated drinks and packaged juices
Contain sugar and additives and offer no benefit.

Why this matters

A baby's body under one year is very sensitive. Unsuitable foods can cause:

  • allergic reactions
  • digestive problems
  • strain on internal organs
  • the formation of unhealthy taste habits

What you can give instead

A safe diet usually includes:

  • breast milk or an adapted formula
  • vegetable and fruit purees
  • cereals without sugar or salt
  • age-appropriate baby foods

The main rule — introduce new foods gradually and watch your child's reaction.

Proper nutrition in the first year is the foundation for future health.
